The most common cause of rusty water is iron reducing bacteria called Leptothrix. Iron bacteria are commonly found in soil, water wells, water treatment plants and water distribution piping systems where soluble iron exceeds 0.2 parts per million. Soluble iron in the water provides food for the bacteria. The higher the level over 0.2 ppm the more conditions are favorable for their growth. Rusty or discolored water is the result of a bacterial feeding process. Laundry, tableware, and plumbing fixtures can be stained if the condition is left unchecked. The affected water can be red or brown, and may have a black sediment. Water heater anode rods must be frequently replaced because iron bacteria will cause premature failure of these parts.

The best method of dealing with these difficult contaminants is oxidation and filtration. To optimize effectiveness requires the right media and adequate backwashing ability. Our patented Filox-R® oxidizing media is a superior choice for any residential, commercial, or industrial need to deal with an iron, hydrogen sulfide, and manganese problem. It outperforms traditional Greensand and Birm, and requires no oxidizing chemicals for regeneration. We then place an appropriate amount of this media in one of our new Enpress® composite pressure vessels fitted with a revolutionary new Vortech™ distribution system. Instead of using gravel to distribute water through the media for backwashing, Vortech™ use an innovative distribution plate that provides vastly improved performance and eliminates the need for re-bedding if service is ever required.
The whole system is then controlled by a premium metered valve manufactured by Clack. These valves are legendary for offering the greatest efficiency coupled with the most reliable performance. They attach to plumbing through integrated by-pass valves making installation a snap. With us these are not an expensive option priced separately to make the base price of the system seem more attractive. We include these by-pass valves as well as an installation kit with every system we sell.
Note:
The use of chlorine pre-treatment is recommended to insure that iron bacteria do not foul the media. This pre-treatment may also be required if your water has a high ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential) because highly reducing waters may cause premature exhaustion or even destruction of any media like Filox-R™ that is based on manganese dioxide. Here is a simple test to determine if ORP may be a problem in your situation:
Mix 1.75 ounces (50 grams) of water with 0.75 ounces (22 grams) of potassium permanganate crystals. Then take 2 drops of this mixture and stir into a fresh 1/4 gallon (1 liter) sample of the subject water. Let the subject water stand for 15 minutes. If a pink color remains, Filox-R™ can be installed without additional oxidants. If the pink color disappears, additional oxidants will be needed for Filox-R™ to function properly.
